Bulldogs Recycle!

Baton Rouge Magnet High School is receiving the Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) Schools Recognition Award in Pollution Prevention for implementing a school-wide recycling program called Bulldogs Recycle! The goal of the program was to reduce the amount of paper and plastics that make its way to landfills. Recycling bins were placed in all classrooms, offices and workrooms. Students were responsible for maintaining the bins, sorting, and delivering contents. Students collected approximately 16,000 pounds of paper and plastics during the school year. Through these activities, environmental benefits include saving landfill space, conserving natural resources, saving energy and reducing greenhouse emissions. The club members were inspired to reduce their ecological footprint, instill pride among their peers for their environmental contributions and gain valuable lessons in environmental stewardship that will be carried into their adult lives.

Anni Zhang has been selected as the East Baton Rouge Parish Student of the Year.

Visual Art

 The Visual Arts celebrates success in multiple Art competitions this year.  Student work was chosen to represent our school and Parish in the Magnet Schools of America poster contest.  The given theme this year was “Magnet Schools transforming America today for a Stronger tomorrow.”   Congratulations go out to the selected winners which include Amelia Cummings ,  Rechaun Eskridge, and David Cleveland.   Also, a number of student works were chosen to represent Baton Rouge High in the annual DeBose Fine Arts Visual Arts Exhibition.  The works will be on view at the Shaw Center from January 9, 2013-February 5, 2013.  A winner’s reception was held on January 9^th.   Baton Rouge High swept the high school categories with 12 out of 16 winners. Those students who placed in the show include: Tenea Montague, Kristen Stewart, Jessica Vo, Tommy Do, Alexa Wolfkiel, Gabi Perry, Leon Xu, Morgan Vice, Finn Kelley, Mackenzie Aplin, Kasie Antunez and Katherine Doucet.  The winner’s reception was well attended and was a great way to feature the amazing student work.

 

 

» Seniors, Jasmin Chriss, Karisha Olson and Alexis McGee have recently been selected as the 2012-2013 winners of the National Center for Women & Information Technology Award for the state of Louisiana.  They will be presented with an award on April 16, 2013.

Baton Rouge High Junior, Zoe Swarzenski, Nets Perfect ACT, PSAT Scrores

Zoe Swarzenski has accomplished as a mid-year junior what most seniors never do – perfect scores on her ACT and PSAT tests, a 790 out of 800 on the SAT 2 Math test and the highest score possible on the Latin Advanced Placement test. The Baton Rouge Magnet High School student currently is enrolled in Latin V Honors, English III Advanced Placement (AP), Logic, Chemistry II AP and Lab, Calculus AB AP and American History Honors. She is ranked seventh in her class with a cumulative grade point average of 4.64. When Swarzenski took the ACT test for the first time ever this school year, she said she “was lucky enoughto get a perfect score.” About the same time, she took the PSAT and earned the top score of 240.

 Presidential Scholars Announced

The East Baton Rouge Parish School System has eight candidates for this year’s United States Presidential Scholars Program, All but one, who is a student at McKinley High School, attend Baton Rouge Magnet High School. A total of 49 candidates were announced for the entire state with 13 being from the Baton Rouge area.

The district’s student candidates are:

The students were selected for their exceptional performance on either the College Board SAT or the ACT Assessment exams. Further consideration is based on students’ essays, self-assessments, description of activities, school recommendations and school transcripts. Inclusion in the Presidential Scholars Program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in the community and school activities. The Commission on Presidential Scholars will make the final decision on who eventually will be named a Presidential Scholar – one male and one female student from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and areas abroad wherestudents reside; 15 students at-large; and up to 20 students from the creative and performing arts.

Science Teacher Awarded Grant Sangita Mathur, a Baton Rouge Magnet High School teacher, is one of 86 receipients from across the United States awarded an American Chemical Society (ACS)-Hach High School Chemistry Grant for the month of February.

Yue Sha has been selected as the winner of the 2011-2012 Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement and will receive a $2,000 college scholarship.  Only one male and one female student in each of the 50 states are awarded this scholarship.

Principal Nanette McCann has been selected as the East Baton Rouge "Principal of the Year."  Ms. McCann was presented with an award at the school board meeting on January 19, 2012 and honored with a reception highlighting her achievements.

The ACT Organization issued a press release, October 25, 2011, announcing students who earned a perfect score on the ACT Exam.  Anni Zhang, an 11th grade student at Baton Rouge Magnet High, earned this honor.

 

A panel of administrators and faculty announced the selection of the Baton Rouge Magnet High School "Student of the Year" for 2011-2012.  Jasmine Miller was selected to represent the school.

Jasmine Miller 2011-2012 Student of the Year Jasmine would like to attend Harvard or Rice University. She plans on having a double major in economics and political science.

The new 2011 Louisiana State High School Student of the Year has been awarded.

The Students of the Year Awards Program is designed to recognize outstanding elementary, middle/junior high, and high school students. This program, patterned after The Teacher of the Year Awards Program, is an excellent opportunity to recognize from each school system those students who have demonstrated excellent academic achievement, leadership ability, and citizenship. The Students of the Year Awards Program is sponsored by the Louisiana State Superintendent through the State Department of Education and the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Congratulationss to our BRMHS Girls Track Team for earning the number one team in the state in the girl’s indoor track and field.  We are very proud of you!

Baton Rouge High recently participated in the Regional Science Bowl at Tulane University.    This is the first time in our history and at the Regional Quiz Bowl, that all three teams won and dominated the competition.   Three teams entered the competition. Team A won the 1st place and will go to DC for the National Competition.  Team B won 3rd place, and team C won 4th place.

Seniors Hope Blanchard and Addison (Addie) Ross were recently presented at the National Charity League River Road Chapter's ninth annual Senior Soiree and recognized for serving over 1,051 hours of community service in the Baton Rouge area.

Congratulations:  The Girl's Golf Team is the 2010 District 5-5A Champions. They also placed 3rd in the Metro Golf Championship.
