Performing Arts

Not only does BRMHS boast the only student operated AM and FM radio stations in the country, it is also the home of one of the most active programs of performing arts in the state. In fact, the school was honored with a "Creative Ticket in the Arts " in 2001 by the Louisiana Division of the Arts and nominated for recognition on a national level.

In addition to the radio training program, the department offers multi-year courses in choral and instrumental music, drama, stagecraft, ballet, and television production.

The drama department, with technical assistance from stagecraft classes, produces several main stage and small stage plays each year. One is a Shakespearean play which provides collaborative possibilities with English classes, and one is a winter production in conjunction with the dance department which is performed each year for audiences of hundreds of local elementary school children. The dance department also produces its own recitals, and many of the dancers perform with other dance companies.

Instrumental course offerings include woodwinds, jazz, and strings. Large and small groups from each of these areas perform in assemblies, concerts, and competitions. The annual Lee Fortier Memorial Jazz Concert is an unique and popular event.

BRMHS is also the high school for students who have been identified as talented in the performing arts, and these students add a great deal to the cultural life of the school and community through their participation and performances.

The choral music component of the department is widely regarded as one of the best in the South, if not the nation, bringing home sweepstakes awards from every competition, performing at Carnegie Hall and presenting classics of musical theater.

Music students regularly appear as soloists and members in all-parish and all-state ensembles, orchestras, bands, jazz bands, and choirs.
