Foreign Languages

The languages offered are French, Spanish, Latin, and Greek. In French, Spanish, and Latin, students can continue the study of the particular language up to level five, advanced placement. At levels III, IV and V, students can choose a regular course or an advanced placement course. Many of our students begin the study of a second foreign language as they get to a higher level of their first foreign language. Students studying foreign languages at BRMHS regularly receive eight or more hours of college credit in foreign language.

Foreign language students compete in the SLU Foreign Language Festival in Hammond, the District Literary Rally, and the State Literary Rally. There are also competitions at state club conventions. Our students have traditionally achieved a high level of success in these competitions.

Foreign language clubs are popular.  BRMHS foreign language clubs include: French, Spanish, German, Arabic, and Chinese (as well as the Junior Classical League.) Members enjoy speakers, cultural dances, and food tasting from the countries being studied. Students of French sample croissants and galette des rois (king cake) at their annual French Club breakfast. Other foods on the menu are tamales, plantains, and flan (Spanish); as well as tabbouli, hoummous, and baklava (Arabic).

Eleven Latin students recorded perfect scores on the 2003 National Latin Exam. Foreign language students also participate in Baton Rouge's annual International  Heritage Festival.
