Social Studies

The Social Studies department offers a wide variety of courses that challenge students in this area. The freshman World Geography course is offered on both a regular and honors level. Sophomores take two one-semester courses, Civics and Free Enterprise. Juniors take either regular or Advanced Placement American History, and senior offerings include American Government and AP European History.

BRMHS is one of the few high schools in the country to offer full year classes in western philosophy and logic. These are two of the elective courses which also include Sociology, Psychology, and African American Studies.

Humanities is a project-based course that combines American History with English III in a two-course block.

The department also offers students the opportunity to be citizens of the world, travel abroad, hear guest speakers, win scholarships and participate in competitions. They may attend the Close-Up program in Washington, D.C. and meet congressmen and other important government officials. They may compete in the African Heritage Quiz Bowl, essay contests, social studies fair, National History Day and The Adovacate's current events rally.

The BRMHS Mock Trial Team won the 2003 parish and state competitions and competed in the national finals in New Orleans.
