Science
The science department offers a full array of classes in physical
science, biology, chemistry, physics and environmental science. Regular and
honors classes are offered at all levels and advanced placement classes are
available for biology, physics and chemistry. The advanced placement classes
provide a full class-length component of lecture and laboratory work.
The school's science fair is one of the largest in the area, and many
students advance to participatein regional, state, and even national level
competition. Intel and Westinghouse sponsor science talent competitions which
regularly honor Baton Rouge High students.
Science is very much a hands-on activity as students build and test
rockets, bridges, and protective containers, as well as do genetics research
with generations of fruit flies.
Teachers Lai Cao and Fran Frost received a $1,000 ADF grant for a
collaboration between chemistry and physics classes. Cao also received an ADF
fellowship grant to visit outstanding science departments in high schools
throughout the nation. She will be visiting schools in San Jose and Berkeley,
California.
Two science competition teams, in Science Quiz Bowl and Science Olympiad,
regularly rank high in the state. Last year's Quiz Bowl team placed second in
the state, while the Olympiad team, which takes written tests and builds
projects, finished first in regionals, first in state and 20th in the
nation.
