The BRMHS Mathematics Department offers a variety of opportunities for math practice and applications. Regular, honors and Advanced Placement courses are available on all grade levels. The program is built sequentially. Algebra covers concepts in depth to provide a strong foundation. Geometry classes all students to improve reasoning skills and become stronger problem solvers, often in real world applications. Algebra II reinforces algebra concepts and introduces new ones. Advanced Math reinforces algebra and geometric connections through one semester of trigonometry and one semester of pre-calculus. Advanced Math II is an introduction to calculus. Calculus AB and Calculus BC are college level Advanced Placement classes.
As a college preparatory school we require four years of math courses. In addition to guiding students in developing skills for college, we help them learn to be successful test-takers and problem solvers. Our students' scores have been steadily improving on the Iowa Test and the GEE-21 tests, and our Advanced Math II students' scores have increased an average of three points on the math section of the ACT.
We combine technology, hands-on activities, high expections and extensive tutoring programs to prepare our students to be successful.
Mu Alpha Theta is a national mathematics honors society and our chapter is one of the most active in the state. We host a math tournament each year and participate in many others. BRMHS has won the first place sweepstakes award at state convention seven of the past eight years, and one of our members has served as state president for each of the past four years. Our students have also done well in such competitions as Ala-La-Miss, AMC, AIME, Mandelbrot, and ARML.
