Student Government Association (SGA)

The purpose of the Student Government Association of Baton Rouge Magnet High School is to develop, represent and regulate the civic and social activities of the student body. As such, SGA is the organization that provides a way for each student to have a voice in decisions and it anchors the other club here at BRMHS. Those elected to SGA office must maintain high academic standards and have proven leadership abilities.

Each year SGA is responsible for opening the year with a rollicking Spirit Assembly designed to introduce the student body to their student government, class officers and some school activities. The assembly is also a vehicle for publicizing the Get Acquainted Dance, which is held the same evening.

In October, SGA is responsible for the Fall Fair, which is held the last Friday of the month. This activity coincides with Halloween and students are encouraged to dress up in their most acceptable outrageous costumes as they participate in club activities designed for both fundraising and fun.

About six years ago, SGA instituted a school community activity called Make a Difference Day, held on Saturday in October or November. On this day, students, club sponsors, teachers and parents, roll up their sleeves and get to work giving BRMHS a facelift. Activities include light painting, heavy cleaning, moving and rearranging furniture, polishing doors, and doing any other sprucing up jobs pre-designated by the faculty and staff. Make a Difference Day is filled with hard work, camaraderie and fun and is a great way for students to earn club service hours.

In December or January, SGA sponsors the Winter Formal, our winter ball. It is a glorious evening in a beautiful setting, with students dressed in their formal best. For students not attending prom, this is the next best thing.

As of the 2007 - 2008 school year, SGA now holds the annual Spring Fair. Just like Fall Fair, it is a time of club activities for fundraising and fun.

Student government programs culminate with SGA Slide Show, usually held in April. This show is an encapsulation of all the activities of the year: SGA programs, school performances, sports activities, classroom lessons, teacher instruction and administrator highlights. One of the most highly anticipated SGA activities, the Slide Show allows most of our students the chance to see themselves on film.

At the end of April or the first week in May, elections for the next year’s officers are held, both Student Government Association and class officers. At this election, the importance of civic duty is emphasized as students use voting machines provided by the parish to cast their ballots.

SGA meets on A-Club in the Library.
